MESSAGE FROM BILL BUCKLEY Melissa Webb Speedway Manager MESSAGE FROM MELISSA WEBB Hey race fans, welcome back to Baypark Speedway for our nal night of the 2025–26 season! It's certainly been an up-and-down season weather-wise—not just for us, but for speedway tracks right across the country. But we've made it, and we're nishing strong. Tonight, we host the Demo Derby, always a fan favourite. And here's a cool fun fact—a woman has taken out the win four years in a row. How good is that! We're closing out the season with a stacked lineup featuring Sprintcars, Ministocks, Stockcars, and F2 Midgets, so you can expect plenty of action to send the season off in style. A huge thank you to everyone who's been part of the journey this season—our loyal fans, dedicated staff, car owners, drivers, and pit crews. We truly couldn't do it without you. We'll be releasing next season's calendar in the coming months—ngers crossed Mother Nature is a bit kinder to us! Until then, we look forward to seeing you all back here for Opening Night, Labour Weekend 2026. 1 Bill Buckley Promoter, Baypark Speedway Welcome everyone to Baypark Speedway for what promises to be a spectacular night of racing as we bring the curtain down on another incredible season. Firstly, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who have played a part in making this season so memorable. To our drivers and teams who put it all on the line week in and week out, your dedication and passion are what make our sport so special. To our loyal fans, thank you for your unwavering support — rain or shine, your energy in the stands never goes unnoticed. And to our valued sponsors, we simply couldn't do this without you — your continued backing means everything to our sport and our venue. Tonight, we nish the season in style with a massive programme of action. We'll see the nal round of the Auto Super Shoppes Sprintcar Trifecta decided, alongside Bay of Plenty Championship honours for the F2 Midgets and Ministocks. Adding to the excitement, we also have Stockcars in action, bringing their trademark toughness and entertainment to the track. And of course, we cap it all off with one of the most anticipated events of the year — the Demo Derby. Expect plenty of smash, crash, and all-out entertainment as our drivers go to battle in a wild nale you won't want to miss. While tonight marks the end of the current season, it's only the beginning of the countdown to the next. We're already looking forward to welcoming you all back when racing returns over Labour Weekend to kick off another exciting summer of speedway action. On behalf of everyone at Baypark Speedway, thank you once again for your support throughout the season. Enjoy the racing tonight, travel safe, and we look forward to seeing you back here next season.

Tim Ferguson, The Man, The Myth, The Target? At Baypark Speedway, Tim Fergusson has spent a couple of years calling the chaos his voice rising above the roar of engines, narrating the split-second decisions, the near-misses, and the moments that dene a night at the track. But this weekend, there’s no headset, no safe distance, no commentary perch. This Saturday night, Fergusson becomes part of the very mayhem he’s built a reputation describing. And he knows exactly what he’s getting into. “It’s a bit like being promoted and punished at the same time,” he laughs. “I’ve called enough carnage over the years… it’s time I contributed some myself.” A DIFFERENT KIND OF RACING Fergusson’s racing résumé is anything but ordinary. A former World Champion in BMX, and a seasoned competitor across high-speed Speedway classes — from Midgets to TQs and F2s — his career has been built on precision, control, and calculated aggression. But the Demolition Derby? That’s something else entirely. “In Midgets and TQs, everything is about hitting your marks and making smart decisions,” he explains. “In a Derby, the strategy is basically ‘try not to die’ and ‘aim for the guy who looks more broken than you.’” It’s a mindset shift few elite racers ever truly embrace — trading nesse for chaos, racecraft for survival instinct. And Fergusson isn’t sugarcoating it. “If you’re not prepared to hit, you shouldn’t be out there. It’s the only motorsport where bad decisions are part of the game plan.” FROM PRECISION TO IMPACT It might sound like a leap — from the razor-sharp discipline of BMX to the full-contact brutality of a Derby — but Fergusson sees more crossover than most would expect. “People think BMX is all control, and it is… until it isn’t,” he says. “Anyone who’s raced knows it can turn into a full-contact sport pretty quickly.” Years spent dodging crashes at high speed have wired his instincts for survival. Only now, the stakes — and the machinery — are much bigger. “In BMX, you’re trying to avoid the crashes. In the Derby… I’m fully prepared to cause them.” FRIENDS, LAUGHS… AND A TARGET Of course, stepping into the Derby doesn’t mean stepping away from the personalities that dene Baypark — especially his commentary partner, Macau Johnson. Fergusson is quick to credit Johnson as a major inuence in his broadcasting journey. But any expectation of sympathy heading into the Derby is quickly dismissed. “He’s supportive,” Fergusson grins. “But in that ‘can’t wait to watch you get taken out’ kind of way.” And he’s probably not wrong.

Because in a eld stacked with over 30 drivers — including names like Ryan O’Connor and Bryce Carter — Fergusson knows exactly where he stands. “I’ve got a massive target on my back,” he admits. “It’s like a nature documentary out there — and I’m the one being hunted.” NO PLAN, JUST SURVIVE Ask about strategy, and Fergusson doesn’t pretend to have one. “This is a Demo Derby — I’m basically driving a matchbox car,” he says. “The plan is full send and hope it holds together longer than anyone else.” It’s a brutally honest approach, but also a realistic one. In a sport where cars fold, engines die, and impacts come from every direction, survival is often the only metric that matters. Still, there’s one thing Fergusson refuses to compromise on. PUTTING ON A SHOW As someone who’s spent years behind the mic, Fergusson knows exactly what the Baypark crowd wants. “A great Derby is chaos — big hits, cars ying everywhere,” he says. “And yeah, I’m absolutely planning to put on a show.” There’s pressure that comes with that — especially when you’re part of the Baypark fabric — but it’s the kind he embraces. “I can’t just cruise around like I’m looking for a park at Pak’nSave. The crowd wants a show.” And he intends to deliver one. WHAT REALLY MATTERS Winning? Sure, it would be nice. But for Fergusson, success in the Derby isn’t measured in trophies. “If I can land one big hit that gets the crowd on their feet and Macau screaming in hysterics… and my car is still moving afterwards — that’s a win.” It’s a tting goal for a man who has spent years narrating the spectacle — and now nally gets to live it. Because this Saturday night, Tim Fergusson isn’t just calling the chaos. He is the chaos.

There’s something magical about a summer night at the speedway. The lights icker on, engines re up, the smell of fuel hangs in the air, and fans ll the grandstands with anticipation. It’s the moment everyone waits for: drivers, crews, promoters, volunteers, and families alike. But in recent seasons, that moment has become harder to guarantee. Rain has always been part of speedway. It’s the opponent no one can outdrive, no one can out-engineer, and no one can negotiate with. Yet lately, it feels different. Seasons once dened by sun and dust are now shaped by clouds and cancellations. Meetings planned months in advance are wiped out in hours. Titles, championships, and showcase events are pushed aside by weather forecasts and saturated tracks. For tracks and promoters, every rain-out is more than just a disappointing night; it’s a nancial hit. Weeks of promotion, advertising, posters, social media campaigns, staff planning, and logistics vanish with a single downpour. Gates don’t open, crowds don’t arrive, and the costs don’t disappear. The bills still come in, the work has already been done, and the next event still must be built from scratch. For drivers and teams, it’s just as painful. Cars are prepared, engines serviced, tyres tted, trailers packed, and crews ready. Hours are spent in workshops, money poured into parts and fuel, and time taken off work, all for a race that never happens. Momentum is lost, When the Rain Wins – The Story Every Speedway Knows Too Well championships are disrupted, and seasons that should have been full of battles become a patchwork of missed opportunities. And for fans, it’s the simplest loss of all, missing out. Missing out on the noise, the excitement, the rivalries, the memories. Missing out on taking the kids to the track, catching up with friends, and watching heroes do what they do best under the lights. Some seasons have been especially cruel. KihiKihi once managed only a couple of meetings in an entire season, a heartbreaking reality for a club that pours its heart into every event. A few years ago, Beachlands down south didn’t even get its opening night underway until February, long after the season should have been in full swing. Last season, some of the biggest meetings on our calendar, the nights everyone had circled, were all washed out and forced onto rain days, robbing drivers and fans of the moments they’d waited all year for. And this year? It’s been a battle again, week after week, meeting after meeting, hoping the skies will nally give Speedway a break. Baypark Stadium adds another twist to the story. Anyone who’s spent time around the track knows the saying, Baypark seems to sit on a piece of land where rain and dark clouds often go around it rather than over it. And many nights, that’s been true. The track can be dry, the sky overhead clear, and the racing ready to go.

But here’s the problem: fans don’t see Baypark from the grandstand when they’re at home. They look out their own windows. If it’s raining in their backyard, or even if there’s just a threat of rain in the air, many will decide not to risk the drive. By the time the clouds lift over the stadium, it’s already too late, the crowd has stayed home, the gates are quiet, and the night never becomes what it could have been. It’s a cruel reality of modern speedway. Even when the track is race-ready, the perception of rain can be just as damaging as the rain itself. It’s hard not to wonder whether something is changing. Summers seem hotter, storms seem heavier, and the weather feels less predictable than it once was, especially as autumn approaches. Tracks dry out under scorching heat, only to be drowned by sudden rain just as the weekend arrives. Sometimes it feels like the season is being fought not just on the track, but against the climate itself. Yet, despite it all, speedway keeps going. Promoters keep planning. Clubs keep working. Drivers keep building cars. Fans keep hoping. Because speedway has always been about resilience. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes the rain wins. But when the gates nally open, the engines nally re, and the rst green ag nally drops, it reminds everyone why they keep coming back. Not just for the racing, but for the community, the passion, and the belief that next weekend… the weather might nally be on our side.
