REMEMBERING PETER HARFORD

We learned with great sadness of the passing of Peter Harford, a man who played a significant role in the story of Baypark Speedway and New Zealand speedway.

Peter dedicated around 50 years to the sport, from his days as Clerk of the Course at the original Baypark, through to becoming the Promoter of the new Baypark Speedway when Bob Clarkson’s vision began to take shape.

When the new stadium rose from the ground at Mount Maunganui, Peter was Bob’s front man and a driving force behind the promotion. He was a true promoter — someone who wasn’t afraid to think outside the box, talk the talk and, more importantly, make things happen.

Peter came up with initiatives ahead of their time, from bringing underprivileged families from Merivale to the Speedway on buses to creating incentives to attract some of the best competitors in the country to register at Baypark — and they did.

His enthusiasm helped build excitement around a brand-new, privately owned stadium that was destined to become much more than just a Speedway venue.

Twenty years on, we can look back at that era and appreciate the enormity of what was created. The original dream of Bob Clarkson, supported by Peter and many others, saw a spectacular new stadium rise in Mount Maunganui — bringing Speedway, rugby, cricket and major events to the heart of the Bay of Plenty.

Peter went on to become a Life Member and Club Patron of the Bay of Plenty Speedway Association, leaving behind a remarkable contribution to our sport and our community.

And for many, Peter’s legacy will be found not only in the stadium, but in the friendships, opportunities and memories he created along the way.

Peter’s Celebration of Life will be held at Mercury Baypark, Truman Lane, Mount Maunganui, on Wednesday 16 September at 1.30 pm.

Our deepest condolences go to Peter’s family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Commentary will swap out “The Place For Pace” on opening night and revert back to Peter’s slogan when Baypark Speedway opened in 2001, The Oval By The Ocean”, in honour of Peter, Saturday, 24th October.

Thank you, Peter, for everything you gave to Speedway and to Baypark.
