When did you start racing and how did you get into it?

Started racing motocross at age 4 and raced competitively until 2020 in NZ, China and Aus and after to many injuries and needing a change, I switched over to speedway in 2021. I had always been into Speedway and always watched it and then my brother in law started racing in 2020 and that made me want to try it even more after helping him out a little crewing etc.

What classes have you run over the years?

Only V6 Wingless

What are you most proud of in your racing career?

Motocross: 1st China International race, 7NZ MX1 in 2020.

Speedway: 1st Rotorua Heat Race, 4th BOP Champs Feature at Bay Park, 1st Palmerston North Heat Race

What titles have you received while racing?

1st China International Race, 1st 2008 NZ Supercross Title, nothing yet in Speedway racing

What is your all-time favourite track to race at and why?

Baypark is rad, nice and wide and Palmy, that place is like a highway with really nice dirt

What are you currently doing in the off-season and how do you prepare mentally and physically for this sport?

Currently re building my whole car after writing it off at Palmy in April (engine rebuild, new chassis etc). Physically Speedway is far off how fit you need to be for motocross so not really much on that side of things anymore, my job roofing is hard work so that keeps my pretty fit along with riding for fun still.

What do you hope to achieve next season?

A feature win at Bay park in front of my family, friends and sponsors would be the ultimate goal and less crashes and damage hahaha

What characteristics do you think are important to becoming successful in racing?

Car racing has taught me to be patient and you don’t have to win every race to win the feature

What is happening with your car in the off-season any major changes we should look out for once the season starts?

Everything haha. New chassis, signage, panels, engine. Tim Coleman is re building the engine from Coleman Performance Engines in Palmy so that will be cool.

Speedway racing can be fast and dangerous, looking out toward the fans, what do you think is one thing the fans will never understand until they are behind the wheel of a race car?

How much faster the car feels when your in it and how much more there is to it rather then just “going around in circles” haha

What is your favourite race on the NZ race calendar?

The opening night at Baypark, Teams Champs in Palmy and World 240s

Who do you admire most in motorsport and why?

Sheldon Haudenschild, he is always willing to go places on the track that other people wont and hes into motocross also. Fan boy for sure haha

Let’s talk about Baypark Speedway,

  • What made you decide to run the Mighty M?
  • Its close to home and is a epic facility

  • What do you think of the changes and the way direction the speedway is moving?
  • The changes have made a huge difference (thanks Rodney) and its cool seeing the social media side of it growing and helping us drivers and teams build ourselves a following and a brand

  • What would you like to see improve for both the speedway and your class?
  • I really am hoping the class grows and we get more tracks to race at. We currently only have 3 tracks we can race at pretty much which is frustrating but hopefully it will grow. Im used to racing every weekend with motocross and I want to do the same with speedway (sadly I cant afford a Sprintcar haha) and hopefully get more spectators now that Covid is going away

Tell us about your sponsors, what kind of business they run and the support you get from them? Gaskin Plumbing has been a title sponsor for almost 4 years now, he is a friend of mine doing an amazing job running a successful plumbing business in Taupo.

Premier Roofing is a great roofing company doing work all around the north island with a background in MX and car racing.

Flying W Suspension does FK shocks and does MX and car suspension tuning and does an insane job, has a shock dyno and all.

Izzy and the boys at Ace Drywall TGA are a new sponsor for 2022/23 and they do Drywall Plastering in Tauranga, they are at most Baypark events helping Josh Verity and Izzys daughter Taylor so I’m excited to have them onboard my program also this season.

Extract Visuals is my side business specializing in motocross graphics, jersey heat pressing and logo design but starting to get into the car side of things now also as you’ll see on my car and also 8m and 9M.

We know sponsors play a big part but so do crews and families, tell us about your support team?

They sure do. The crew is pretty small but a huge thanks has to go to my wife Jess and the kids for letting me do this and spend hours prepping the car and spending money, my parents for supporting me in everything I do and never missing a race and the boys who help on the car at every race (Sam, Kurt, Jesse, Brendan and Thomas & Dave for helping with fixing the car and set up, also my friends and other family members that come watch and get into it.

.Final words …… What would you like to say to your fans and the wider speedway community?

Everyone check out my Instagram (Whiteopen) to keep up to date with what I’m doing racing wise and see content etc. and just a massive thank you to everyone who helps me go racing cause there is no way I could do it alone. See everyone in a few months!!
