We got to catch up with 2x USAC Midget Champion and 2x and Current Chilli Bowl Champion Logan Seavey before he headed down under for the Midget World Series, we talked New Zealand, Western Springs, and what he thought about Baypark Speedway.
HI Logan, can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to start racing?
I started racing Outlaw Karts in Northern California in 2002 at 5 years old. My brother began a few years before me but prior to him, we had no family history of racing. Just thought it would be fun to do as a family and it took off from there!
What are your impressions of New Zealand, and are there any specific sights or experiences you’re excited to explore while you’re here?
New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been and have missed it since my last trip there for the NZ title in 2020. Hopefully, a trip to Rotorua for the luge is in the cards again this trip! That was really fun to do in the past. Also just looking forward to the beaches, maybe a trip to Waiheke Island, and some hikes to explore the country wherever we land! Always in for some adventures while traveling in New Zealand.
As you prepare for the Midget World Series, what excites you the most about the competition?
It is just a great trip all around and to get to keep racing midgets over the “winter” is a great way to stay on top of my craft leading into the Chili Bowl. The competition seems to get tougher every time and I wish we could have some more Americans coming over to experience what racing in NZ is like. I’m excited to get in these new cars Green Way has built!
With three unique tracks and some long races ahead, do you have a specific strategy or mindset going into the series?
No, fortunately, I am pretty familiar with the Springs and Baypark! But, with as much as I race here in the States, I’m used to seeing so many new tracks throughout the year that I treat them just like going to any new track. Learn as much as possible and show up ready to compete.
Tmez described Baypark as a gladiator colosseum arena, what do you think about Baypark?
I did compete at Bay Park in one of my previous trips over to NZ. It is such a unique place to race midgets at and one of the neatest facilities for dirt racing that I’ve been to! Racing inside a true “stadium” is something we rarely get to do and it gives it a very unique feeling to it. In the past I did not have great results there but looking to improve on that this trip!
You have raced Western Springs before, this being the final season for the iconic venue what does that mean to you knowing you are heading back?
It is truly tough to wrap my head around it still. It is THE Icon of Speedway in NZ and to see what has happened is pretty heartbreaking for me and I’m just an outsider! What the Springs means to racing in NZ is indescribable and it will be impossible to replace. You can never rebuild the history that the Speedway holds and it makes this trip that much more important to me. To capture a win there in its last season would be pretty high on my list of wins in my career.
