Reflecting on Success:

For Josh McClymont, the roar of the engines and the thrill of the track define his racing journey. Reflecting on the previous season, Josh says, “Last season was the best of my career to date. I was fortunate to claim victories at several race meetings across the North Island, which was a huge confidence booster.” His hard work and dedication paid off when he was honoured with the regional class competitor of the year award at the prestigious Speedway NZ awards. “Being recognised at that level was surreal. It validated all the effort my team and I put into our racing.”

The Six Shooter Spirit:

Despite the challenges facing the Six Shooter class, Josh remains optimistic about its future. “The Six Shooter class is great just as it is. It’s an ideal stepping stone for young drivers transitioning from Ministocks into open-wheel racing. The cars are affordable and fast, providing a competitive yet fun environment. Over the past two years, I’ve had a blast racing in this class, and I look forward to more of it.” Josh’s passion for the Six Shooter class is evident as he speaks about the camaraderie and competitive spirit at every track.

Engine Battle: V6 vs V8:

The debate between V6 and V8 engines is a common topic among the class, but Josh is straightforward in his view. “The V8 isn’t a factor in our class right now, so my focus is on the V6, which is incredible. It’s affordable and reliable, and there’s no shortage of engines available. The V6 ensures that competition remains tight and exciting both on the North Island and on the South Island. It’s always a great show for the fans.”

Expanding Horizons:

Josh’s excitement for the future of the Six Shooter class is palpable. “Seeing more tracks run the Six Shooter class would be fantastic. The more opportunities we race, the better. This season, we have a couple more tracks joining, which is exciting.” When asked about his dream track, Josh doesn’t hesitate: “I would love to race at Western Springs. The atmosphere there is electric, and competing on that iconic track would be an awesome experience.”

Future Aspirations:

As much as Josh enjoys racing Six Shooters, he has his sights set on future goals. “I’ve always been fascinated by the speed and adrenaline of Sprint Cars and Midgets. Transitioning to one of those classes would be a dream come true. It will take a lot of hard work, time, and maybe even a bit of luck to get there”

Behind the Scenes:

Josh attributes much of his success to his dedicated family and crew. “I’ve been fortunate to have my dad, uncle, and pop guiding me since I started. They taught me how to read the track and make the necessary adjustments. Their experience has been invaluable. And a special shoutout to Payton, who always runs up to check the track conditions between races. It’s a team effort, and I’m grateful for all their support.”

Double Header Excitement:

With Baypark Speedway collaborating with Paul Smith to host the Predator Double Header, Josh is buzzing with anticipation. “This is one of the standout weekends in our racing calendar. Having a doubleheader at home is a fantastic opportunity. Thanks to Paul Smith and Baypark, we can work on and wash the car right at home, which makes things much more convenient. We’re sticking to our usual prep routine, ensuring the car is ready for what promises to be an exhilarating weekend of racing.”

• Event to Watch: “The International Midget 50 Lapper is always a spectacle, and the Palmy Teams event is a must-see.”
• Event to Race: “Any event organized by Paul Smith. He knows how to put on a great show.”
• Overseas Event: “The Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway is on my bucket list.”
• NZ Driver: “I look up to my cousin Luke McClymont, as well as Rodney and Cole Wood, and Ash Henstock. They’re all phenomenal drivers.”

Speedway Roots:

Josh’s journey into racing began at a young age, fuelled by a rich family legacy in the sport. “I’m a third-generation racer. My Pop and Grandad started it all, and then my dad, uncle, and cousin followed suit. I began racing Ministocks at Waharoa Speedway when I was just 10. By 12, I moved to Baypark, where I raced until I was 17. After a brief stint in stock cars and a couple of years off, I got back into racing with the Six Shooters. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Support Team:

For Josh, his support system extends beyond just technical help. “I’m incredibly lucky to have my family and friends by my side. My parents, the owners of the 71M Six Shooter, have always been my biggest supporters. My girlfriend Zara, her sister Mya and Payton my crew chief, my mates Sambo and Giorgia are always there to help and keep the car in top shape between races. My extended family, including my uncle, aunt, cousin Luke, and others, all contribute to our team’s success. They sacrifice their weekends for my passion, and I couldn’t do it without them.”

Race Day Ritual:

Race day is a well-rehearsed routine for Josh and his team. “We start early, with Payton usually leading the charge. We do a final bolt check, load up the car and spares, maybe grab a quick bite, and head to the track. It’s all about staying focused and making sure everything is in place for a great day of racing.”

Season Goals:

Looking ahead, Josh is optimistic yet grounded. “If we can have a season like the last one, I’ll be over the moon. Consistency is key, and I want to deliver strong performances for our team. We aim to be a formidable force on the track.”

Role Models:

When it comes to inspiration, Josh doesn’t have to look far. “What my cousin Luke has achieved is pretty awesome. Winning the North Island Midget title in his first season was remarkable. Then there’s Rodney Wood, who not only impresses on the track but is also a great person off it. Watching and learning from them has been invaluable.”
