My passion for speedway goes all the way back to the mid-1970s, when my uncle first dragged me along to the Palmerston North Showgrounds. I can still remember the old wooden fence, grandstand and atmosphere of those early nights at Palmy.
Some early highlights were watching Bruce & Norma Turner win the NZ Sidecar Championship, and being there for the very first NZ Stockcar Teams Championship in 1981, when the Panther B Team defeated the Wanganui Warriors in the final. Great memories that have stayed with me for decades.
After a break from 1986 until 2018, it was my wife who suggested we head along to a summer meeting. The moment the cars hit the track, I realised the passion was still there!
Since then, the camera has given me the opportunity to capture some fantastic action at Harrisville, Waharoa, Baypark and Meeanee, including five meetings at Meeanee last season and a couple the season before.
A huge thank you to Meeanee Speedway and all the tracks that have given me the opportunity to shoot from the infield. It’s an incredible place to photograph from, but speedway is a dangerous sport and staying focused at all times is essential.
Two highlights have been capturing the 2025 NZ Superstock Championship qualifying night at Nelson, where Todd Hemingway went on to win the title in a runoff, and Chris Cowling winning the NZ Super Saloon Championship at Meeanee, two great Baypark competitors.
I’m now looking forward to the 2026/27 season, capturing more of the speed, dust, action, crashes and celebrations that make speedway so special.
From watching behind the wooden fence as a kid to now standing in the infield with a camera in my hands, the passion has truly come full circle.
I’m looking forward to capturing the action at Baypark “The Place For Pace” throughout the 2026/27 season.
