The Bay Super Bowl was a milestone meeting putting Baypark Speedway back on the map again as a great speedway venue that can work. Nearly 9000 spectators piled into the stadium forcing the promotions team to reopen the newly locked off part of the grandstand.

This time 4 classes lined up on the dummy grid which allowed for another great pyrotechnics display to finish off the proceedings of the event.

The Midgets were back and it would be our very own Peter Hunnibell who would pick up win 1 over 9 times champ Michael Pickens. Pickens however would take heat two strongly over Brad Mosen who won the last Baypark Speedway feature. Heat 3 was all Brad’s this time coming home in front of Hunnibell which meant these 3 cars were the ones to watch come feature time.

The feature race was a hard fought 20 lap battle between those three cars who came home 1st, 2nd and third but all the glory was Michael’s this time and well deserved.

The Superstocks had 3 races and it was the captain Kerry Remnant that dominated the evening with all 3 wins, the stand out was new comer Dylan Towler who brought the Scrapman racing 66m car normally driven by Mark Decke home for 2nd. Stockcars filled the field due to low numbers but the racing was still outstanding to watch.

The Youth Ministocks got all 3 races in this time and local hero Bryan Fraser looked like the boy to beat again with the first two race wins seeing his car untouchably, however in race 3 Rotorua’s Caleb Stanaway never gave up and managed to grab the flag and secure the race win.

The Sprintcars had 4 heats and a feature and it was outside drivers that led the charge, Kihikihi’s Daniel Thomas picked up where he left off in the last feature by grabbing the win in heat 1, James Dahm also from Kihikihi in heat 2. Finally in front of a huge crowd our Rodney Wood took out the win in heat 3 and fastest lap with a 13.826. However Kihikihi were back to spoil the party in heat 4 with Dean Brindle crossing the line first.

The feature race was all class from Daniel Thomas who picked up his second and back-to-back win after battling with Dean Brindle for 18 of the 25 laps, Wood claimed 3rd and the quickest time 13.856 to round out the podium.

The crowd enjoyed the massive Fireworks display and the team, staff and volunteers left that night knowing we had something special for the remaining of the season.
