Did you know? that the 2001-2002 North Island Sprintcar Championship was the first Speedway New Zealand Title raced at the new Baypark Speedway at the start of the -2002-03 season, after multiple cancellations due to bad weather.
It was won that year by multiple New Zealand Sprintcar Champion Alan Wakeling, followed by Colin Entwisle and Dean Brindle.
This weekend there will be 5 drivers competing again for the title that was in that race. 22k Dean Brindle, 4M Colin Entwisle, 18m Greg Pickerill, 23M Kerri-Anne James, and 21A Kerry Brocas. Also, Ossie Sokol’s son Zachary will also be racing in the 47A Sprintcar.
More great facts from the great race are, every year at least one driver competing this weekend has made the podium since 2001, that is 21 years of brilliance and dedication from some of these guys in the field.
Allard leads this poll with 4 podiums including 3 wins. McDonald 6 podiums and 3 wins Wood 4 podiums 2 wins and current NI Champion Jamie Larsen has had 3 podiums and 2 wins.
