For Baypark stockcar driver James Proffitt, strapping into the car each race night isn’t just about chasing a chequered flag – it’s about being part of something much bigger.
While he never turned a wheel at the original Baypark, the legacy of those who came before him is front and centre in everything he does.
“It’s always a great feeling being part of the new generation carrying on the legacy from the original Baypark,” James says. “Especially when I look around and see everyone that’s been there for many years, hearing their stories of speedway of Baypark – to then be able to share that experience racing on the dirt with some of those legends means a lot to me.”
There’s a real sense of pride as he talks about the family connection that ties him to Baypark’s past.
“I’ve got family who raced and spectated at the original track,” he says. “That’s part of what motivates me to keep coming to the amazing track we have today. Whether I’m watching from the stands, racing the stockcar alongside other competitors, or getting advice from people who’ve been around for a long time – I’m always learning the art of speedway.”
But like many racers at Baypark, James is aware that the future of the venue isn’t guaranteed, and that uncertainty hits hard.
“Well, honestly, as a current driver registered to this awesome club, it feels gut-wrenching to know that one day it could all be gone,” he admits. “I enjoy racing on this track – whether it’s for a championship or just a normal night of speedway, especially when I’m out there with my mates and family. For a lot of us, speedway racing isn’t just a sport – it’s a lifestyle that we love. And Baypark Speedway is part of that impact. It gives us a strong community and family connection.”
That sense of connection, both on and off the track, is what makes Baypark so special in James’ eyes.
“From my perspective, what makes Baypark such a special part of the wider speedway scene is that it can be a life changer in many ways,” he explains.
“You make new friendships and meet people from all over the speedway world – no matter what class they enjoy. Baypark brings together groups that might not normally cross paths at other tracks.”
Since getting behind the wheel, James says the track has shaped him in more ways than one.
“Racing at Baypark in the stockcar has made a real impact on me,” he says. “It’s given me the chance to experience new types of racing, like teams racing – whether I’m crewing or driving – and it’s helped me develop my skills in general. But it’s also made me who I am off the track too.”
So what would James say if he had the opportunity to speak directly to Tauranga City Council, local fans, or the next generation of young drivers?
“I’d say, with confidence, that speedway – and Baypark in particular – matters to our community,” he says. “It gives a lot of people an outlet, and it’s a great thing for mental health. The community we have at Baypark gives one of the best vibes in the country to be part of. Drivers like me notice that, and it gives us motivation to put on an awesome show for the crowd. It’s inclusive, it’s accessible, and it’s welcoming every single time.”
And with that, James signs off with a shout-out to everyone who’s played a part in keeping the Baypark spirit alive.
“Cheers for all the work the team at Baypark Speedway has put into making it what it is today,” he says. “Bring on the 2025/26 season. See you there!”
