Lightning strikes Baypark Speedway again

Back by popular demand, Luke “Lightning” McKinnon and his incredible Lightning McQueen drift car are returning on Saturday, 2nd November for our Fireworks Extravaganza!

Fans and kids, get ready for an exciting photo op in the Fanzone, where you can meet this life-size version of the beloved movie character. Last season, kids’ faces lit up when they saw a near-identical replica of their favorite red racer—and this time, they can touch, hug, and even sit inside for their own movie star moment!

Luke McKinnon’s Drift Journey: From Mazda RX7 to Global Sensation

Since 2021, Luke’s car has evolved from “American-made” to proudly “Rotorua-made,” swapping Bud Light for L&P and Chevrolet for Mazda. Just like the original Lightning McQueen, Luke takes an unconventional approach—drifting with precision by turning right to go left.

What started as a personal project quickly gained global attention, with toys and even tattoo designs inspired by his creation. “It’s pretty crazy,” says Luke, who now dedicates his car to charity events and thrilling rides for kids. While a return to competitive drifting may be in the future, for now, Lightning McKinnon is all about bringing high-speed excitement to fans of all ages. “It’s cool; I enjoy it. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
